Elva Kartchner

Elva Kartchner was born March 12, 1912 in Snowflake, Arizona to Darien Kartchner and Margaret Ann McCleve. When Elva was a little girl they had alot of pigegons hanging around the house. Her father said there were too many and he built a trap. Elva would clean the pigeons and eat them.Elva loved to hold babies. She was holding a baby once and her sister wanted a turn but Elva didn't want to give the baby up yet, so her sister broke Elva's favorite doll.Elva used to play on the porch with her sister. She would yell out something silly then duck down. People would think it was her sister Sadie who had yelled out.Elva used to milk cows when she was a little girl. One day Elva and her friend were playing. They took a walk down to the river or ditch. Sadie was in the backyard when she heard poppping sounds like gun shots. Curious she ran around to the front yard and there was Elva and her friend on the front porch laughing. At the River they had filled gallon cans with polliwogs. They put piles of them in the tire tracks on the road and would wait for a car to go by and run over them. Elva raised and sold Chinchilla Rabbits for meat and pelts. Her Papa would dress the rabbits, the girls stretched the pelts. They used the money from the rabbits for school books and clothes. Her family was in charge of preparing the sacrament table for many years. They had to wash the sacrament cups in hot water and dry the glass with linen towels till it sparkled.Elva took shorthand and was very good at it.
